Your Story Is More Powerful Than Your Job Title
The Narrative North Star | A newsletter by Digital Dolphins
Where storytelling, AI and human insight meet. Stories and signals for the future we are shaping.
What if the story that makes people lean in is the one you haven't yet learned to tell?
There is a moment many of us recognise.
Someone asks, “So, what do you do?”
You know your profession. You know your expertise. You know the value of your work.
And yet, somehow, the words feel too small.
You explain what you offer, how you work, perhaps even list your achievements.
But do people really connect?
Because your job title tells people what you do. Your story tells them why it matters.
And that is where trust begins.
A lesson from six million television viewers
Let me take you behind the scenes of my earlier career in television.
At a German private broadcaster, we worked on a daily soap adapted from the long-running Australian television series Neighbours.
We grew the audience from around 600,000 to six million viewers a day.
What was our secret?
It began with something surprisingly small.
A knock at the door.
In the Australian scripts, characters routinely knocked on doors. But for our German audience, ringing the doorbell was much more familiar.
That tiny cultural difference revealed something important.
We weren't yet reflecting the world our audience recognised.
So we changed our approach.
We brought their everyday experiences, cultural habits, hopes and aspirations into the stories.
We even took the story beyond the television screen. Through our “Fame principle”, a fictional band formed within the show, performed music and then stepped into the real world with concerts.
The audience could recognise their world in our story — and then become part of ours.
The lesson stayed with me: Let your audience recognise their world, and they will be more willing to step into yours.
But my own story had another turning point
By every industry measure, I had a successful television career.
Yet, as increasingly voyeuristic reality television became the norm, I began questioning whether the stories we were producing still aligned with my values.
Eventually, I made the difficult decision to leave.
At the time, I was raising two sons on my own. My career, financial security and sense of direction were all shifting.
But something became clear.
I cared deeply about the stories we put into the world — and their impact on how people think, feel and understand themselves.
That realisation led me into education, storytelling coaching and eventually to founding Digital Dolphins – Storytelling for Impact.
Today, I help creators, educators and purpose-led leaders find their authentic voice, connect with their audience and make their message matter.
This is more than my professional biography.
It is my inner story truth.
And it explains why I do what I do.
Where does your inner story truth begin?
Often, it begins in a moment when you stopped running.
A moment when something changed.
A moment when you realised:
“This matters to me.”
Perhaps it was something you witnessed. A challenge you overcame. An injustice you could no longer ignore. Or a quiet moment that changed how you saw the world.
Here is a small invitation to reflect:
“I began to care about __________ when __________.”
Take a moment and finish that sentence.
You may have just discovered the beginning of your most meaningful story.
Because a powerful story is a bridge between two shores.
On one shore is your lived experience.
On the other is your audience's world — their hopes, challenges and aspirations.
The bridge between them is meaning.
And the place where those worlds meet?
Connection.

Discover the Magic of Storytelling
15 & 22 October 2026 | 10 AM BST 8 PM AEDT | Live and interactive | Free
I'd love to invite you to take this exploration one step further.
We're opening our Digital Dolphins Story Lab — a creative, supportive space where we move beyond talking about storytelling and actually practise it together.
Inspired by the collaborative energy of the television writers' room, we'll work with real stories, real questions and real human perspectives.
Using the Digital Dolphins STORY Framework, we'll explore how to:
-
See the person you want to reach, and understand their world.
-
Tell the story only you can tell, rooted in your lived experience.
-
Open the heart before the mind, creating emotional connection.
-
Reveal your message with clarity, so people understand why it matters.
-
Yield real-world change, turning your story into meaningful action.
What will you walk away with?
Something practical. Something personal. Something you can begin using immediately.
Your own Core Narrative Sentence.
One clear sentence that brings together the people you serve, the challenge they face, the transformation you offer and the deeper truth behind your work.
We'll use this simple starting point:
“I help [person] who are struggling with [tension] to [desired shift], because [my inner story truth / why it matters].”
It's not about creating the perfect elevator pitch.
It's about finding words that feel true to you — and meaningful to the people you want to reach.
And yes, we'll practise in the Hot Seat!
This isn't another session where you listen, take notes and return to business as usual.
We'll make room for live storytelling practice in the Hot Seat.
Bring your story, your opening line or your unfinished Core Narrative Sentence.
Together, we'll explore what connects, what needs more clarity and how you can make your message more human, memorable and compelling.
We'll use the intelligence of the group, just as we did in our television writers' room.
You'll also receive a workbook to guide your reflections and help you shape your story.
No performance required. No polished script necessary.
Just curiosity, openness and a willingness to explore the story only you can tell.

Come with your ideas. Come with your questions. Come with that story you haven't quite found the words for yet.
And leave with a Core Narrative Sentence that helps people understand not only what you do, but why your work matters.
Because the goal isn't to tell a bigger story.
It's to tell a truer one — and build a bridge into someone else's world.
I look forward to exploring yours with you.
