Connection within creates connection beyond. Story Alchemy builds the bridge.
Welcome to The Narrative North Star — stories and signals for the future we are shaping. Each edition is a small invitation to pause, notice what is emerging, and turn insight into meaningful story. In this edition, I’m sharing a thought, a shift, or a tool to help you navigate storytelling, AI and human imagination with more clarity and heart.
In my last newsletter, I invited you to listen to my conversation with Karen Davies about why people buy your story before they buy your offer.
Today, I want to take one idea from that conversation a little deeper.
Because before a story can connect with someone else, it needs to be connected to you.
I have been putting this into one sentence:
Connection within creates connection beyond. Story Alchemy builds the bridge.
Imagine a bridge being built from two opposite shores.
On one shore are you: your experiences, values, purpose, perspective and inner story truth.
On the other shore is the person listening: living a different day, carrying their own questions, worries, hopes, desires and dreams.
Powerful storytelling happens when those two worlds meet.
But the bridge has to begin somewhere.
The first connection is within
Your inner story truth is not simply the story of what happened to you.
It is the deeper meaning you have made from what happened.
What did you learn?
What changed you?
What do you now understand, notice or believe because you lived through that experience?
What matters enough that you want to pass it on?
This is where storytelling begins.
Before strategy.
Before the perfect hook.
Before the polished post.
There is a moment of listening inward.
Because when we are disconnected from our own truth, we often reach for the words we think we should say. We follow formulas. We imitate language that seems to work for somebody else.
The result might be technically good.
But it may not feel alive.
When you connect with your inner story truth, something changes. Your words carry more coherence. More presence. More of you.
And that inner connection becomes the foundation for connection beyond.
Then cross to the other shore
Of course, knowing your truth is only half of the work.
A story is not complete until someone receives it.
We often begin with the question:
What do I want to say?
There is another question that matters just as much:
Who do I want to reach — and what is happening in their world?
I often say:
Before you improve your story, improve your ability to see the person listening.
Choose one client, one reader or one person in your audience.
Then become genuinely curious.
-
What might their day look like?
-
What are they carrying right now?
-
What are they worried about?
-
What are they excited about?
-
What are they longing to change?
-
What might make them stop and think, Yes. This speaks to me.
-
What do they need from you — and why you?
This is not about manipulating an audience or trying to say whatever will get attention.
It is about empathy.
It is the ability to step outside your own perspective for a moment and see the world through another person's eyes.
Then you return to your own shore.
You ask:
What is true for me that could matter to them?
That is where the bridge begins to meet in the middle.
Story Alchemy is what happens between the two
For me, this is the heart of Story Alchemy.
You are not simply turning experiences into content.
You are bringing together two worlds:
your inner truth and another person's lived reality.
You take something that is personal enough to be true and shape it so it becomes universal enough to be felt.
And that is when a story can begin to create movement.
Because the stories that stay with us rarely just give us information.
They shift something.
A thought.
A feeling.
A possibility.
A decision.
Sometimes even the way we see ourselves.
That is what I mean when I talk about storytelling that can move your world.
It begins with movement within you.
A moment of recognition.
A truth becoming clearer.
An experience becoming meaning.
Then you give that meaning a form that can travel.
And when it reaches another person at the right moment, it may move something in their world too.
Connection within creates connection beyond. Story Alchemy builds the bridge.
In my conversation with Karen, I share how working in television trained me to see the audience first, how one question about a pair of earrings opened the door to women's visions for change, and a simple coffee-shop exercise for strengthening your curiosity.
Perhaps you have already listened once.
This time, I invite you to return with two questions:
What is the inner story truth I am really trying to share?
and
Does my story bridge reach the world of the person listening?

Your truth matters.
So does the world of the person listening.
Connect with what is true within you. Become curious about what is alive in them. Then build the bridge between those two worlds.
Because when a story creates real connection, it does more than communicate.
It can move your world.
Warmly,
Bettina

P.S. Before writing your next post or email, spend five minutes on each shore. First ask, What is true for me here? Then picture one person and ask, What is happening in their world today? The story lives in the bridge between the two.
Thank you for reading The Narrative North Star.
Until next time, may these stories and signals support you in seeing more clearly, creating more consciously, and shaping the future with intention.
