Imagination as Civic Power — Storying a Better Future
Stories help us rehearse the future before it arrives.
Welcome to The Narrative North Star — stories and signals for the future we are shaping. Each edition is a small invitation to pause, notice what is emerging, and turn insight into meaningful story. In this edition, I’m sharing a thought, a shift, or a tool to help you navigate storytelling, AI and human imagination with more clarity and heart.

Hello Changemakers,
This week, we’re walking into a beautiful and timely idea: the role of imagination and storytelling in shaping a better democratic future.
The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society have launched twentyfifty – Utopias for a Democratic Society, an essay and story competition inviting researchers around the world to imagine democratic life in the year 2050.
And what makes this call so powerful is its central invitation: not simply to analyse what is broken, but to imagine what could be possible.
In a time when public conversations can feel dominated by crisis, division, uncertainty, and technological disruption, imagination becomes more than a creative luxury. It becomes a democratic skill. A way of asking: What kind of society do we actually want to live in?
Stories help us rehearse the future before it arrives. They allow us to step inside possible worlds, meet people who do not yet exist, and feel the consequences of choices we have not yet made. A policy paper might explain a new system, but a story can help us experience it. It can show us what dignity, belonging, fairness, trust, and freedom might feel like in everyday life.
The twentyfifty competition asks researchers to create narrative visions grounded in scholarship but ambitious in hope. Submissions might explore future communities, education, work, public participation, security, freedom, or the meaning of belonging in a digital world.
For Digital Dolphins, this is a wonderful reminder that storytelling is not just entertainment. It is a tool for civic imagination. Whether we are educators, artists, researchers, facilitators, or changemakers, the stories we tell help shape the futures people believe are possible.
So here’s a creative invitation for the week: imagine the year 2050. Democracy has not disappeared. It has evolved. What does it look like? A neighbourhood? A workplace? A public meeting? Who gets heard? Who belongs? What has changed because people dared to imagine differently?
Perhaps the future begins not with prediction, but with a story brave enough to make hope feel practical.
So, dear changemaker, what democratic future would you write into being?
Come share your thoughts, sparks, and story seeds in our members’ circle. Let’s keep creating futures with heart, courage, and imagination.
